About

Alexandra Chiara, PhD

I am a licensed clinical psychologist with extensive experience treating a diverse client population in a variety of settings, including hospitals, psychiatric institutes and community mental health clinics. I received my Bachelor's degree from McGill University in Montreal and followed my studies up by obtaining two Master's degrees in health psychology and stress management from the Universidad Complutense in Madrid.  My doctorate training at Temple University included specialization in assessment and psychotherapy, intensive research on depression, anxiety and resilience, and an internship at Temple University Hospital where I further developed my skills in health psychology.  Having established my own practice 19 years ago, I continue to develop my skills through specialized training.  This enables me to provide up-to-date treatments that foster the personal growth my clients are seeking.  In 2020 I expanded my practice to provide engaged and effective teletherapy.

My approach is problem-focused and collaborative, emphasizing clients' inherent strengths and helping them to live according to their priorities.  I combine techniques from the interpersonal and cognitive-behavioral traditions in psychotherapy.  Interpersonal psychotherapy explores how your relationships enhance or disrupt your well-being.  A positive therapeutic relationship encourages clients to improve how they deal with the significant people in their lives.  Cognitive-behavioral psychology addresses how your thoughts and interpretations of specific situations affect your mood and behavior.   Specific techniques are used to identify and modify thinking patterns that lead to distress and self-defeating behaviors.  Both approaches foster insight and motivation and can lead to improved mood, health, productivity, and most importantly, to a greater enjoyment of life.
